Scandium oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, fluoride, oxalate, and phosphate are all insoluble in water and neutral to basic media. The fluoride is readily soluble in excess HF forming the ScF 63-. The scandium hydroxide dissolves readily in NaOH. Sc sulfate is readily soluble.
Scandium is often then precipitated from solution using oxalic acid to produce a scandium oxalate which is calcined to scandium oxide. The oxalate precipitation process works in sulfate, chloride and nitrate solutions across a broad pH range and is in itself an effective purification process.
